Standing in awe at St Andrews Bay, I didn't know it and other sites would soon close due to an avian influenza outbreak. This highly pathogenic virus, fatal to many animals, affects birds, mammals, and humans. Recently, it killed thousands of seals in South America. South Georgia's isolation has protected its wildlife from many diseases, but avian flu likely arrived with migratory birds. With dense wildlife populations, the virus threatens the ecosystem. Scientists now face the challenge of containing the outbreak to prevent devastation.
