“House of Bears” , Kolyuchin Island, Chukotka, Russia.

Shrouded in fog, the remote island of Kolyuchin in the Russian Far East looked eerie and deserted. Suddenly, I noticed movement in the windows. From our small yacht, seeking shelter from the storm, I grabbed binoculars — and the ghostly shapes came into focus: polar bears. Around 20 of them, mostly males, wandered through the abandoned settlement, exploring windows and doors.

Polar bears are naturally curious and opportunistic. While females with cubs stayed near the shore, the males roamed among discarded fuel barrels. Such a gathering is rare here. Most bears in this region follow retreating sea ice further north in summer. But in September 2021, loose pack ice brought them to the island.

Using a drone with low-noise propellers to avoid disturbing them, I captured an image that felt like a glimpse into a post-apocalyptic world — where nature reclaims what humanity leaves behind.

Polar bears are very curious by nature - they walked around the houses, checked every door, window, nook and cranny. I got to capture these magical moments - polar bears seemingly living in abandoned human houses - a striking image that resonates with us.

These images are the biggest photos my career thus far. The viral popularity of the series took my life by storm. Among the many interviews, one conversation stands out. A journalist from Greenland, Galya Morell, told me an ancient Greenlandic legend... Once upon a time, polar bears and people lived together. They came home, took off their heavy fur coats, sat down at the table and drank tea. The natural world was in harmony with man, but then the circle of life was broken.

Russia’s Kaluga Region is a stable leader in the industrial growth and per capita investments. Despite this, wild bisons love to stay in Kaluga’s forests for some reason. I was pleasantly surprised by their energy and active lives! They run around, create wallows and of course, mate. But the height of their entertainment appeared to be trying to gore the photographer who didn’t pay enough attention!

Swarming

I’ve had the pleasure of diving in many different places all around the world, but there is honestly nothing better than diving with Steller sea lions (in my humble opinion!). Let me set the scene - dozens of sea lions rushing past, blocking the sun, breathing out bubbles and playing with bits of algae. Then they stop, observe, and poke your mask with their muzzles, looking deeply into your eyes. They grab your hand with their flippers, nibbling at everything: your limbs, head, fins and regulator hoses. Our bodies were covered with bites and scratches, our wetsuits with holes, and our hearts with indelible imprints of love for these animals!
